Berchman Austin Vaz, MD, PhD

Dr. Berchman Austin Vaz is board-certified in Rheumatology and Internal Medicine and has been practicing in Arizona for more than twenty years. He completed his Clinical/Research Fellowship in Rheumatology and Immunology at Tufts Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts. He received his medical school degree at Grant Medical College, Bombay University, India, and his Ph.D. degree in Medical Microbiology and Immunology at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas.

Dr. Vaz was Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, from 2000-2003. He was at the University of Arizona from 2003-2010 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in 2010. He was Director of the Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program at the University of Arizona from 2006-2010.

Dr. Vaz treats adult rheumatologic diseases. His special interests include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis. He has been a Principal Investigator for numerous clinical trials studying new medications for these diseases.

Dr. Vaz has authored more than twenty publications in peer-reviewed journals and has presented his research work and led clinical discussions at various local, national and international meetings. He has made numerous video presentations for ABCnews.go.com discussing treatments for osteoarthritis including hyaluronic acid, COX 2-inhibitors, NSAIDs, salicylates and capsaicin. 

Dr. Vaz has been recognized by his peers as a Castle Connolly U.S. Top Doctor every year since 2012.  He was listed as a Top Doctor in Tucson Lifestyle magazine from 2015-2022.
