DXA Bone Density Testing
Osteoporosis is a serious health problem, but often a silent disease. Low bone density affects over 20 million Americans and causes 1.5 million fractures yearly. After age 50, 1 out of 2 of women will suffer an osteoporotic fracture. Osteoporosis is less common in men, but 1 out of 6 men suffer a fracture such as a hip or spinal fracutre, often with serious consequences.
The only way to detect low bone density before the first fracture is with a DXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) bone density test. This is a special type of x-ray that determines the strength of your bones and whether you are at risk for fracture. DXA is painless but you will have to lie flat on a padded table for about 5 minutes.
All of the Rheumatologists at Catalina Pointe Rheumatology have taken and passed the International Society of Clinical Densitometry course on DXA, and are Certified Clinical Densitometrists.
We perform the scans personally to ensure high quality and immediate reports, both to the patient and physician.
If you wish to have your DXA bone density test performed at another site in Tucson, please let us know.
